THIRTEEN
Maya’s lids flew open, revealing the deep pools of her stunning eyes.
Connor’s heart leaped into his throat.
She’s conscious!
“Maya...” He peeled the tape from her mouth and gathered her into his arms. He’d intended to give her a quick, reassuring hug, except he didn’t want to let her go. Not ever. “I’m so glad I found you,” he whispered in her ear.
Squeezing her to him, he reminded himself they had to hurry if they were to escape. He released her and thumbed away the tear streaks.
Her eyes grew wide, drawing him into their striking depths for a half second—but urgency kicked him back to the moment and his senses.
He’d feared he’d have to swim with her unconscious weight, but more importantly she was alive, and by all appearances, unharmed, though she had to be suffering both mentally and emotionally.
Hopefully, she would be more eager to cooperate now.
“You found me!” She stared at him. “But how? How did you get on this boat? Did—”
He pressed a finger to her lips then held up a diver’s knife in his right hand, and lifted the snorkel and mask in the other. “I’ll explain later,” he said, his words barely audible. “But we have to hurry. Your guardian left you unattended to talk to someone on the dock. We have seconds, if that.”
He was so thankful he’d been given this chance, otherwise he would have had to take her by force. He didn’t relish the thought of engaging the brute Scarface had left her with.
They could hide in the water for a while, if needed, with a few accessories. Better to hide than take another vehicle affiliated with Hernandez—been there, done that and it was too big of a risk considering how many people might recognize the boat.
With quick skill, he sliced through the nylon marine rope securing her wrists and ankles, and then the one anchoring her to the bed. Quietly, he led her up the steps and hesitated near the deck, watching.
The guy stood on the dock a few yards from the thirty-foot cruiser where he kept Maya, still talking to a scrawny-looking fisherman. But Connor could barely see him from here with all the neighboring slips securing boats of every type and size obscuring the line of sight. He and Maya had a chance and they would take it.
Connor continued up and, once on the deck, he crept to the side and climbed over into the warm water, gesturing for Maya to do the same. She slid in next to him without making a splash. Even if the man had seen them trying to escape, Connor would have jumped with her and made a swim for it. But this way, they had some time to swim away between the boats and hide.
When the man realized Maya was missing, his next thought would be to search the dock. But Connor and Maya wouldn’t be there.
Scarface’s biggest mistake? Leaving Connor alive. Under no circumstances would he give up on finding Maya. Nor would he give up until she was safe.
